At the Northwest end of the island four separate owners provide trails that link to one another:

Mitchell Hill DNR is 320 acres owned by the State Department of Natural Resources. Its trails are a mix of former logging roads and new, narrower trails created by the island's mountain bikers. Hikers, mountain bikers, and horse riders are welcome, but motorized vehicles are not.

The DNR is trying to divest itself of all its properties in San Juan County. The County Land Bank and others are working to assure that this property remains in public ownership. The Mitchell Hill Conservancy is a group devoted to that effort.

NOTE: Maps of trails connecting the DNR and Roche Harbor Highlands are incomplete, and it is easy to get lost in this area.
