Subject: New Trails On Website
Date: June 20, 2008

More than seven miles of new and existing trails on Roche Harbor Resort property have recently been added to our website. To view these trails and to print the corresponding map, please click here.

These trails are in the area bordered by Roche Harbor Road, the Roche Harbor air strip, and Rouleau Road. The main trailheads are across Roche Harbor Road from the sculpture park and on the south side of the OPALCO substation near the intersection of Roche Harbor Road and West Valley Road. Some of these trails existed previously. Others were recently created by Trails Committee volunteers.

If you use the new Roche Harbor Airport Trail, be sure to walk on the south side of the fence and not on the edge of the runway. It is recommended that you walk this trail from east to west to have the best views.

In collaboration with management of Roche Harbor Resort, Trails Committee volunteers are in the process of making several improvements to the Roche Harbor Resort trail system to make more of the trails usable in the wet season and to install signage. Elevated walkways have been installed in several areas, gravel laid down in others, and ditches dug to improve drainage. Maps of the entire trail system are also being installed at several trailheads. Takeaway maps will also be available soon at several locations. Although many of these improvements have already been made, final project completion will not occur until next year.

We wish to thank the numerous Trails Committee volunteers who have worked on this project for their hard work over the last year in making these improvements a reality. We also thank Roche Harbor Resort for continuing to make the trails on its property available to the public.

We appreciate your support of the San Juan Island Trails Committee.
